Hamster Princess Giveaway
I have rhapsodized about Ursula Vernon’s new series, Hamster Princess before. The first book, Harriet the Invincible, came out in August from Dial Books.
Harriet’s story starts off like the classic Sleeping Beauty tale.
Christening? Check!
Good fairies? Check!
Evil fairy? Check!
Curse? Check!
But then, things get interesting. Harriet is not a frail, retiring sort of princess the way her mother wishes she was. So, when she finds out she’s under a curse, instead of swooning or going into a decline, Harriet decides to take up jousting and cliff-diving. After all, the curse needs her alive to work, right?
This story is fantastic for anyone who loves adventure tales, kick-butt female protagonists, and slightly fractured fairy tales. Also, battle quail.

I’ve always loved Beauty and the Beast. 🙂
Beauty by Robin McKinley has been one of my favorite books since I was fairly young. It’s a beautiful retelling of Beauty & the Beast.
My favorite has always been The Juniper Tree!

I have a copy of The Little Mermaid, with beautiful illustrations by Daniel San Souci, that I have loved since I was quite small. I still remember seeing it in the theater, too.
I do too. I always liked the Disney, happy ending better.
The Changelings, with caveats. I think it’s traditional in Sweden, but I’m familiar with it through a collection called “Great Swedish Fairy Tales”. The translation/telling is by Helena Nyblom and there are illustrations by John Bauer. I do wish there was a less racist version though (dark skinned and dark eyed = frightening wild troll girl, milk-skinned and golden-haired = most beautiful human baby in the world, which is kinda gross, even if they’re both protagonists). Maybe I’ll try writing one?
I like “Three Strong Women,” which I found in _Tatterhood and Other Tales._ (I also really like “The Search for the Magic Lake,” in the same collection.
I haven’t read that collection. I’ll have to see if I can find it.
