On the Ninth Day of Christmas…

December 21, 2013

proofToday, I’m giving away a copy of Proof of Guilt by Charles Todd.  This is the fifteenth book in Todd’s Ian Rutledge series, but it’s not the sort of series where you have to start at any particular place, so don’t let that put you off.
It’s Christmas and I’m at the bookstore, so I’ll have to keep today’s entry short.  In this volume Rutledge is searching for the secrets behind the death of an unidentified man whose body was left on a quiet residential street in London.
At first it looks like just another traffic fatality, but closer examination shows that the body was moved.  Things become even more suspicious when it turns out that the house closest to the scene is owned by a man who did intelligence work during the war.  Could that really be a coincidence?

To enter the contest leave me a comment about the strangest coincidence you’ve ever experienced.  And don’t forget to enter the other giveaways!

On the Eighth Day of Christmas…

December 20, 2013

ThresholdsToday I’m giving away two books that are personally very important to m; Thresholds and  Meeting by Nina Kiriki Hoffman.  Together, they comprise the Magic Next Door series and, like everything else I’ve ever read by Nina Kiriki Hoffman, I love them.  These books are aimed at a middle grade audience, which is a little unusual for the books I’ve read by her.  Most of them have been more on the adult side, although still perfectly accessible for younger readers.  There is something really special about these two books though.
Part of it is the covers, I won’t lie.  Joshua Middleton did beautiful, luminous covers for both books.  But even more, the story that stretches out inside these covers really touched me.
Maya is a young girl whose family has just moved halfway across the country.  Ostensibly, the move was sparked by her parents finding new jobs, but an even bigger part of the move was that Maya had lost her best friend to cancer.  Everything back in Idaho had reminded her of Stephanie, now, in a new town, she has the chance for a fresh start.  And she gets more of one than she ever could have dreamed.
One night, on their second week in the house, a fairy flies into Maya’s bedroom.  It’s come from the unusual apartment house next door.  It doesn’t stay long, but it touches her with the magic of another place and that provides her with a key across the threshold of the house next door and the entire realm of magic.  Before Maya knows it, she has a secret new friend, one who will never leave her, who knows her as well as she knows herself, who can help her heal.

meeting(This is where we get really autobiographical, so feel free to skip down to the next section.)  Thresholds came out in August of 2010.  My dad, who had cancer, had already been through his first round of chemo and was about to start on his second.  At the time, I was avoiding any books that touched on cancer, I just didn’t want to deal with them, but I gave this one a chance, partly because nothing on the jacket copy mentioned Stephanie and cancer, and then, once I found that (on page 3, it’s not a secret that gets sprung on you) I kept reading because it was Ninia Kiriki Hoffman, and I trust her.
I trust her not to write the kind of story that would leave me feeling worse than I did before I read it.
I trust her not to have included Stephanie to exploit her death for shock value or for pity.
And she didn’t.  Sometimes, people die.  It’s terrible and it’s sad and it can break us apart.  But, we’re still here.  And there is still magic in the world.  Threasholds made me feel better for a little while during a period where everything was scary.
Those of you who know me in real life, or who follow me on social media may know this already, Dad didn’t make it.  He passed away in November of 2010.  Meeting came out in August of 2011, but I managed to get an advance copy much earlier.  And it helped.
These aren’t the sort of books that are typically understood as grief recovery books.  They certainly don’t have to be read that way.  But they, along with a picture book by Oliver Jeffers (The Heart in the Bottle) were my grief recovery books.  They’re beautiful stories, even if you aren’t recovering from something, and really, how many of us don’t need to be reminded to look for everyday magic?

(Ok, the autobiographical dump is over.  You’re safe now.)
This giveaway is for a hardcover copy of both books in the Magic Next Door series.  To enter, just leave me a comment below telling me about a moment of everyday magic in your life.  It can be anything, any moment you felt magic.

Bout of Books 9.0

December 19, 2013

We interrupt this 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway stream to announce that once again, Bout of Books has rolled around.  I will be participating this time and will hopefully knock out a small portion of my To-Read Castle.  I also hope to actually build myself a playhouse out of my To-Read pile and sit in it while I’m reading.  (If I manage that, there will be pictures!)
Here is my official announcement:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 6th and runs through Sunday, January 12th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 9.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog.

On the Sixth Day of Christmas…

December 18, 2013

chimesI’m giving away a book by another of my favorite authors (surprise, surprise).  Today, I’m giving away my advanced copy of Chimes of Midnight by the amazing Seanan McGuire.
This is the seventh in the October Day series.
Dead changlings are showing up in the streets of San Francisco and seriously messing with Toby’s life.  She’d finally reached a more-or-less good place, so, of course, it can’t last.  Her attempt to do something about the deaths leads to a sentence of exile from the Queen of Mists which threatens to destroy everything she’s built.
So, that’s amazing, because Seanan is amazing and should have ALL THE COOKIES.
But then!  Then she added a library!  An amazing library.  The Library of Stars.

To win this book leave me a comment describing your dream library.
Here are the other giveaways you can still enter:
Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry
Wednesdays in the Tower by Jessica Day George
House of Many Ways by Diana Wynn Jones
Soulless manga by Gail Carriger

And now:  the winner of the Naomi Novik giveaway: Emily Ragsdale!  Just send me an email with your address to medusasmirror@gmail.com and I’ll pop it in the mail!  Thanks so much for entering.

On the Fifth Day of Christmas…

SOULLESSMANGA_1Sara gave to you – Soulless manga!  This is the first manga adaptation of Gail Carriger’s novel, Soulless, which is an absolutely delightful steampunk romp.
Alexia Tarabotti is a Soulless- she negates the supernatural, making her the bane of vampires, werewolves, and ghosts in London.  Of course, being a proper young lady she would never go looking for such beings, but when a vampire attacks one during a ball, well… What can one do?

The original novel is delightful and the manga adaptation is very well done.  Here are a few pages:

On the Fourth Day of Christmas

December 16, 2013

houseMy very first blog post here (baring my intro post) was about Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones.  It is one of my favorite books, as evidenced by the incredibly battered copy I still read.  I’m not giving that to you.  It’s mine.
But, what I am giving you is the third in the Howl series, House of Many Ways.
Charmain Baker is a very respectable girl; her parents have made sure of that.  She has been protected from disagreeable things like laundry, cooking, or magic.  However, instead of getting to spend her summer reading and trying to get a job as an assistant to the Royal Librarian, her Aunt has volunteered her to look after a wizard’s house.
Great Uncle William, more properly the Royal Wizard Norland, has had to go away for his health.  He’s left Charmain with detailed instructions and a map to his rather unusual house.  At first glance there are only two rooms, but if you step through from the front room to the kitchen and turn left before your foot hits the ground you’ll find yourself in a long hallway of bedrooms.  Turn a different way and you might be in a basement of the royal palace.  Turn another way again and maybe you’ll be in the kobold caverns.
But Charmain’s adventures don’t stop there.  She also has to deal with Great Uncle William’s new apprentice, a charming dog named Waif, and her new job as assistant to the Royal Librarian, who happens to be the crown princess.  Then there’s a witch named Sophie, a fire demon, a terrible child named Twinkle of all things, monsters, and all manner of unrespectable things!
All in all, I love this book almost as much as I love Howl’s Moving Castle and that is a great deal indeed!

On the Third Day of Christmas…

December 15, 2013

towerIt’s the Third Day of Christmas and today I’m giving away one of my favorite middle grade books of the year – Wednesdays in the Tower by Jessica Day George.  This is a sequel to last years, Tuesdays in the Castle, in which Princess Celie must use her connection to the magical Castle Glower to defeat an attempted coup.
However, even though the kingdom is now safe there is still plenty of adventure to be had in Castle Glower.  The castle seems to be adding more and more rooms, so Prince Rolf dares Celie to catch the castle in the act.  She does, indeed, find another new room, but this one has a little something special in it… a giant egg.
Celie can’t resist the urge to find out what is in the egg.  However, when it hatches she finds out that caring for an infant magical creature is not the easiest thing in the world.  And if the castle gives her a baby Griffin, what else might it be hiding?

This giveaway is for my advanced copy of the book, so it’s a soft cover version.  To enter, leave a comment below telling me about the most unusual pet you’ve ever had.  Or dreamed of having.
The contest will run until December 20th.

On the Second Day of Christmas…

December 14, 2013

rotHappy Saturday!  It’s the second day of Christmas and today I am giving you…
A copy of Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry.  Because nothing says holiday cheer like zombies.  Or Die Hard.  I think I have next year’s tree theme!

Rot & Ruin is a fantastic YA book about Benny Imura, a young man living in a post-zombie apocalypse society.  Benny has just turned fifteen [EDIT:  Benny is turning fifteen, not sixteen.  Thanks to @SesameSquirrel for catching that.]  and must get a job to continue receiving food rations. After trying most of the options, Benny reluctantly decides to apprentice to his older brother, Tom, who is a professional zombie quieter.  Benny expects for everything to be boring and routine, just like Tom, but instead he finds more about the monstrous nature of some humans than he ever thought he could know

To enter this giveaway just leave a comment below telling me about the worst job you’ve ever had.  The giveaway will run from today until December 19th.

On the First Day of Christmas

December 13, 2013

novik1

I know I promised my Top 10 Non-Traditional Books List, but I went to see The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug last night and it threw my entire schedule off.  I also realized when I woke up that it was the first day of Christmas today. So, I thought I’d do a giveaway.  I’ll post one every day from now until Christmas.  All you have to do to enter is leave a comment about what book you most want to receive this holiday season.  Each giveaway will be open for five days, so this one will close on December 18.

This giveaway is for a promo-copy of His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik.  It’s the first in the Temeraire series.  I discussed it over on my Alt-History post.  This series is about an alternate version of the Napoleonic Wars in which dragons are another asset of war.  Our two protagonists are Captain Will Laurence, a naval officer, and Temeraire, a black dragon who has bonded to him.  In this first book, both man and dragon are slowly feeling their way around their new world.  Temeraire is adrift because he is just growing up, while Laurence has had his eyes set on the navy, a career that was destroyed the instant a dragon bonded with him.  Meanwhile, the danger of Napoleon looms on the horizon.  Will and Temeraire don’t have time to find their feet before diving into war.

The Sword & Laser Book Club is reading His Majesty’s Dragon as their alt pick this month if you’d like to get in on some great discussion about it.
Remember, just leave a comment about what book you most want this holiday season.  Then check back on December 18th for the announcement of the winner!
